Obesity is one of the most prevalent health problems in the world. It is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle that includes a diet high in calories, low in physical activity, age, and genetic factors. A person with a BMI between 25-30 is considered overweight and one with a BMI over 30 is considered obese. Obesity can lead to secondary health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, some cancers, sleep apnea, arthritis, and many more.
1. Arthritis :
Obesity-related health problems are a major concern. Obesity leads to arthritis, which is one of
the most common and debilitating diseases. Excess weight puts added stress on the sufferer's
joints and can lead to increased wear and tear which can be very painful. Arthritis is caused by the
buildup of fat and fluid around and in the joints.
2. Diabetes:
Obesity is one of the major health concerns and the most common cause of diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and it usually occurs when the body
becomes resistant to insulin or does not produce enough of it. Type 2 diabetes can be managed
by diet and exercise, but sometimes medication may also be needed.
3. Sleep Apnea:
Sleep apnea is common in obese children and adults. It usually only happens while sleeping, but
can have a myriad of negative consequences, such as heart problems. People with sleep apnea
constantly feel exhausted and also have lesser capacity when it comes to concentrating or
learning new things.
4. Blood Pressure:
High blood pressure is often called "the silent killer" because it usually has no symptoms. High
blood pressure, or hypertension, is a condition in which the pressure of blood flowing through
the vessels is too high. High blood pressure can strain the heart and damage blood vessels and
increase the risk of heart attack stroke or other serious problems
5. Heart Disease:
Obesity is associated with a greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease, especially heart
failure and coronary heart disease. The mechanisms by which obesity increases the risk of
cardiovascular disease imply changes in body composition that can affect hemodynamics and
change the cardiac structure.
6. Fatty liver
Obesity-related health problems are caused by an excess of fat in the body. Excess fat can
accumulate in the liver cells and cause fatty liver disease. This can lead to inflammation,
scarring, and even death of some liver cells.
7. Pregnancy risk
Having a high BMI during pregnancy raises the risk of various complications of pregnancy. A high
body mass index during pregnancy has been linked to various health problems for a baby such
as congenital disorders, birth size, growth problems, asthma, and delays in development.
People who are overweight or obese may also be the subject of weight bias, leading to feelings
of rejection, shame, and guilt—which can worsen mental health issues. Fighting obesity is about
working together toward a healthier future.
